Heatons receive thunderous applause in debut concert at University Muak Lek campus

n Saturday night, January 16, 2010, Boston, Massachusetts-based Irish music duo Matt and Shannon Heaton performed their concert at the Kiti-Tasanee Auditorium. This concert was part of the Heaton’s visit to Thailand, and also their first appearance at the Asia-Pacific International University Muak Lek campus. About 300 concert tickets were sold for the event.

Beginning at 8:15 pm, the couple took the audience through a whimsical and entertaining mix of Irish, American and Thai traditional songs with their voices and guitar, Irish flute and tin whistles as musical accompaniments. Aside from traditional songs, the couple also rendered original compositions of their own. Matt introduced Giant of the Road, a song that he wrote about a boy who loved to ride his bike, and that he bought a bike for his daughter when he grew up. Shannon also introduced her song, The Noodle Vendor in honor of her “Thai father” who was much happier selling noodles at an older age than when he was managing a department store. An interesting highlight was when the audience participated in a sing-a-long chorus “toora lie toora lie addie, sailing to Botany Bay” to the song Botany Bay. The chemistry between Matt and Shannon undoubtedly kept the audience captivated, entertained and most of all, connected to them.

Senior English major student Wanisara Srihomchai shared that she thoroughly enjoyed the music, especially the Thai renditions. “I really like when they sang Lao Dueng Duen. Also, the fact that the singer can sing in Thai is amazing!” During the 10-minute intermission, many people flocked to the front table to purchase the Heaton’s latest album Lovers’ Well. All 24 CDs were sold out quickly. At the end of the performance, the International Club presented a traditional Thai flute as an appreciation gift to the Heatons. Autographs, followed by photo-taking sessions, ended the night.

As Dirty Linen Magazine quoted about the couple offering ‘bright, uplifting music that will make you smile,’ the same sentiment was felt among the audience. Overall, people expressed their enjoyment of the concert and looked forward to more performances such as this here on campus.

The next musical performance is the Mahidol Sax Quartet on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at 7 pm in the Kiti-Tasanee Auditorium. Our very own saxophonist Mr Darrin Thomas will be making a guest appearance in this concert as well. Tickets will be sold at 50 baht per adult, and 10 baht per student.
