Religiosity, Spirituality and Their Relationship to Job Satisfaction: Quantitative Data from Faith-Based Schools in Australia – Part One

Religiosity, Spirituality and Their Relationship to Job Satisfaction: Quantitative Data from Faith-Based Schools in Australia – Part One

Speaker: Dr. Mark B. Vodell

Date: Friday, Feb 23, 2024

Description: This presentation will cover the first section of a two-part mixed methods research project that examined the job satisfaction of teachers who work in faith-based schools. Five aspects of the work of teaching (colleagues, working conditions, responsibility, work itself and recognition) and two transcendent factors (spirituality and religiosity) were examined to see how they impact overall job satisfaction (OJS). In this project data was collected from a sample that consisted of nine schools in two Australian faith-based educational systems: Lutheran and Seventh-day Adventist (SDA). The findings from regression analysis of the quantitative data (n = 221) indicated that OJS was influenced by a combination of direct and indirect relationships that centred around, working conditions, work itself, spirituality, and the age of the respondent. The study also found that religiosity impacted OJS directly and indirectly via the mediating element of spirituality.

Exploring Critical Possibilities in Qualitative Research Analysis: Opportunities in the Asian Context

Exploring Critical Possibilities in Qualitative Research Analysis: Opportunities in the Asian Context

Speaker: Dr. Daron Benjamin Loo

Date: Friday, March 10th 2023

Description: This workshop aims to initiate the exploration of critical analytical possibilities in qualitative research. Broadly speaking, a critical approach in qualitative studies aims to discover and discuss distinct issues affecting the study setting, such as sociocultural concerns. Yet, critical approaches in qualitative studies, especially in the Asian context, remain scarce. Typical approaches employed are descriptive in nature, focusing on recurring meanings which are then interpreted through conventional theoretical views. Such approaches would almost always yield findings and discussion that affirm these theoretical views. In these cases, the question of whether these qualitative studies actually lead to the emergence of new meanings would be raised. This, in itself, is a critical issue that Asian scholars need to reckon with – Do Asian scholars continue producing research that feeds into conventional theories, of which many are grounded in western scholarship? This will serve as the impetus of this workshop, where participants will explore different possibilities to approach qualitative research in a more critical manner.

Determining the factors that contribute to writing anxiety levels among students at an international university in Thailand.

Determining the factors that contribute to writing anxiety levels among students at an international university in Thailand.

Speaker: Dr. Jebamani Anthoney

Date: Friday, Dec 2nd 2022

Description: Foreign language anxiety is the feeling of unease, worry, nervousness and apprehension experienced in learning or using a second or foreign language. Writing is the most difficult of the four language skills. Students experience writing anxiety or writer’s block, which is associated with the learners’ fear of negative and judgmental evaluations. Researchers have reported that factors of language anxiety are related to the nationality and the demographic settings of students. However, studies on language-specific-skill anxiety are lacking. This study aimed to address this research gap by investigating (1) the level of writing anxiety of students in an international university in Thailand, (2) the differences in writing anxiety levels among students based on nationality and geographical location, and (3) the factors that contribute to their writing anxiety.

First In Last Out (FILO): The Experience of Organization Leadership and Change

Speaker: Dr. Kazimoto Paluku

Date: January 28, 2022

Description: Continuous experiences in leadership have become an inevitable tool for recruitment in organizations. Which makes it difficult for managers with lesser visions in leadership to perform well and to ensure successful organizational transformation. Hirlak & Kara (2018) indicated that it is not enough for a leader to motivate employees at work, but it is better to take steps with them and improve their performance as exemplary co-workers. Co-branding: Analyzing the Consumer-based Brand Equity, Brand Image, Brand Personality, Brand Authenticity, and the Congruency between the For-Profit Parent Brand and the Non-Profit Parent Brand

Speaker: Assistant Professor, Dr Damrong Satayavaksakul

Date: March 5, 2021

Description:Co-branding is becoming increasingly popular. Marketers use this brand strategy in attempting to transfer the positive associations of the parent brands to a newly formed co-brand. The strategy provides a way for companies to combine forces so that their marketing efforts work in synergy. However, it is possible that consumers’ evaluations toward one brand will impact their evaluations of the brand that it is paired with. This research examined the specific components of brand fit, in particular, how the fundamental components of brand image consistency, brand personality similarity, and brand extension authenticity interact between parent brands, transfer their quality to the co-brand, and contribute to the perceived brand fit.

“Waiting for a good life” – The plight of Pakistani urban refugees and asylum seekers living in Thailand

“Waiting for a good life” – The plight of Pakistani urban refugees and asylum seekers living in Thailand

Speaker: Dr. Amanda Simon

Date: December 4, 2020

Description: Over the last decade, the number of urban refugees living in Thailand have grown significantly, yet very little research has been carried out amongst this group. To date, Thailand has not ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention and the 1967 Additional Protocol. This has psychological and social consequences for Urban refugees and asylum seekers (URAS). This study is an investigation into the experiences of Pakistani URAS living in Thailand. The research gives a unique insight into the challenges faced by this hard-to-reach community as they battle for survival whilst waiting for resettlement in a third country. This seminar will include an interactive exploration of qualitative data gathered during this research (which is still in process).

Making Safe Antibiotics that Work

Making Safe Antibiotics that Work

Speaker: Dr. Elvin Walemba

Date: October 30, 2020

Description: The inability of antibiotics to kill/control bcaterial infections is fast becoming a global health threat thus the urgent need for potent, blood-compatible, non-toxic antimicrobials that do not lead to resistance. Our studies show that noble metal nanoparticles can fulfill this role. This research has potential to reveal methods to control oral bacterial infection and previously undescribed interactions of platelets with noble metal alloys that allow for their use in the treatment of oral infections with disease-causing bacteria.
