Program Attendance

…

At Asia-Pacific International University, our faith-based school functions according to a time-tested, holistic Judeo-Christian philosophy. Character education is central to our philosophy, and it supports the holistic education that we, as a Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning, believe in. Read more about our Faith & History.

To foster character formation, the University offers a wide variety of programs for students. These holistic educational programs include faith-building activities, character education, civic and moral development instruction, community service and life-skills training. Adequate provision is made for the character development of both Christian and non-Christian students.

To carry out its noble mission of character education, AIU students are required to attend a minimum number of activities to ensure sufficient exposure to and opportunities for well-rounded character development. Therefore, program attendance plays an important role of being a student here at AIU.

Program attendance for students:

Weekly attendance at (1) University Chapel; (2) Student, Department, or Class Assembly; and (3) Dormitory Assembly are  mandatory for all undergraduates. 3 absences are permitted in each of these programs per semester. Each subsequent absence will result in the loss of 3 citizenship points. Below are more information about the mandatory programs:

(1) University Chapel – Wednesday 9:00 a.m. (1cr.) (Note: New time starting 2nd Semester 2018/19 is Tuesday 9:00 a.m.) This program is mandatory for all undergraduate students. This is a weekly University-wide convocation where faculty and students gather for information sharing, special programs, and formal lectures or seminars on moral, spiritual, and character education. (Note that academic regulations require an 80% Chapel attendance record)

(2) Student, Department, or Class Assembly – Thursday 4:00 p.m. (1cr.) (Note: New time starting 2nd Semester 2018/19 is Thursday 9:00 a.m.). These assemblies are mandatory for all undergraduate students. The assemblies are University-wide gatherings of the whole student body for information sharing, special programs, and programs emphasizing moral, spiritual, and character education.

(3) Dorm/Combined Dorm Assembly – Monday 7:00 p.m. (1cr.) This weekly dormitory-wide assembly of students is mandatory to students who are staying in the dormitories. This program is held for the purpose of information sharing, special programs, and programs emphasizing moral, spiritual, and character education. A combined dorm assembly is occasionally held in the auditorium.

More information about required programs with a choice:

AIU organizes weekly required programs, in which Dormitory students attend. Students must maintain a minimum overall attendance level of 70%, be punctual, and monitor their program attendance record.

  • Vespers – Friday 7:00-8:00 p.m. (2cr.)
  • Dorm Devotions – Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. 7:00 a.m. (1cr/each.)
  • Sabbath School Class – Sat. 9:00-9:50 a.m. (2cr.)
  • Character Education Class – 9:00-9:50 a.m. (2cr.) (Note: Program for non-Christian students)
  • Moral Development Seminar – Thursday 7:00-7:50 p.m. (4cr.) (Note: Program for non-Christian students. This program is the time-equivalent of Dorm Devotions.)

While non-Christian students are welcome to attend any program, these programs are specially designed for their character education needs.

Total weekly attendance credits available = 11.

Required minimum attendance for all dormitory students = 70% (Excluding Festival of Faith week)

Dormitory students can also attend Campus Family Group or Mid-week Meeting on Wednesday at 7:00-8:00 p.m. (1cr.) – this program is completely optional.

There is an Orientation in the beginning of each semester. New students will be informed and guided on the rules, regulations and guidelines of the University, which includes Program Attendance. Therefore, new students, don’t worry! You will receive guidance and be given opportunities to ask questions and seek clarification with the Student Administration officers directly.

All programs in a nutshell:

  • Festival of Faith (FOF) – A week-long time of spiritual emphasis each semester featuring outstanding speakers. Attendance is required (day students are required to attend morning sessions only). FOF meetings replace all other weekly programs.
  • Dormitory Devotions – Usually held every Mon., Tues., Thurs., and Fri. morning at 7:00 a.m. in each dorm for about 15 minutes. The dorm is an extension of the home and in most Christian homes, daily family devotions are held to enhance spiritual growth. Special Interest/Ethnic Clubs can obtain Dorm Devotions credit with VPSA approval.
  • Campus Family Groups – Wed. 7:00–8:00 p.m.  Usually meet in faculty/staff homes.
  • Mid-week Meeting – Wed. 7:00-8:00 p.m. at the church. Students who do not participate in a Campus Family Group may attend a Mid-week Meeting.
  • Department and Class Assembly – A time for Department or Class Level information sharing. (Check Academic Calendar for date and time).
  • Vespers – Held every Friday from 7:00-8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday Sabbath School Class or Character Education Class – Sat. 9:00–9:50 a.m.
  • Moral Development Seminar – Thursday 7:00–7:50 p.m. (See schedule for time and place).
